We did a study unit on the human body about 3 years ago. The kids had a blast with it!!

OMG!! This unit took me 3 hours to type up!! YILES!!! All in all, I worked over 6 hours on this unit alone. Good grief!! LOL

~*~Butterfly Resources~*~

 

 

We are right in the middle of our butterfly kit!! Our caterpillars JUST forms their chrysalides this weekend! YAY!!!

 

 

This is what our caterpillars looked like when we got them in the mail on February 28th.

 

 

This is what they looked like just a day or 2 before they started making their chrysalides.

 

 

Here are the chrysalides that were made over the weekend!

 

I worried that I jumped the gun on ordering the caterpillars but the kit says as long as it is above 55 degrees when you release them then they will be OK. SHEW!!!

We should have painted lady butterflies in 7 – 10 days!! YAY!!!

I purchased our kit at Toys R Us but you can get the same kit on Amazon. WOW! I should have waited and bought mine there! LOL It’s on sale right now!!!

YIPPEE!!! I got a new laptop!!! After weeks of fighting with the old one and then over a week without one at all, I am so relieved! No more fighting The Hubby and Cailey and Colin over the desktop! LOL

I was taking to Cailey and Colin yesterday about what they wanted to do next in science. Colin says, “I want to be a mad scientist! I want to mix stuff together!” Ok, chemistry it is! 😉

This post is all about the hands on of chemistry. The more technical stuff (with printables and all that) will come later. Right now I just want to introduce them to the fun side of it and learn that way. 😉

Well, my laptop bit the dust last week. SIGH…. My posts my be farther between until I can replace it. Now I have to duke it out with 3 other members of the family for a chance to use the desktop! LOL The Hubby, Cailey and Colin all use the desktop on a regular basis. Deanna has her tablet, Joshua his PS4 and Jacob prefers his phone. Maybe we SHOULD get Cailey a tablet for her birthday this year! 😉

 

ANYWAY, February 19th is Copernicus’ Birthday! I put together a few resources that can be used for a unit study. I hope you find them useful!

 

BTW, I am making serious plans to buy a new sewing machine AND make some space in this tiny house to do my sewing. It feels like it has been FOREVER!!!! I wonder if I’ll remember how…..

I’m back with a new list today! Living Books for Science! If you missed yesterday’s post it was on Living Books for History.

There are TONS and TONS and TONS of single books that I like for science but today I am going to focus on the series or authors. I would be here forever if I tried to start listing the singles! LOL

 

Most of these will be for elementary/middle school ages BUT there are a few that my high schoolers enjoy as well. I’ll mark those with ***.

Magic School Bus – Don’t forget episodes! You can find them on Netflix and YouTube! The science kits are wonderful. They can be found on Amazon.

*** Horrible Science – They also have science kits but we haven’t tried them…YET!!

Let’s Read and Find Out Science – Great for younger kids!

See How They Grow – Another series that is really good for young kids.

National Geographic Kids Book Series (Although the magazine is AWESOME as well!!!!)

Discovery Kids – Another great series with a great magazine. *** The high schoolers really like the magazine!

The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That! – GREAT TV series on PBS to go along with the books!

*** Janice VanCleave’s Science Books – Hands on!!! Some of them have even captured the attention of my high schoolers!

The Magic Tree House – Most people think history when they think about this series BUT they have TONS for science as well. Currclick has a free book club for the series.

*** Don’t Know Much About… – True, most of the books are history BUT there are a few that are on science topics. They have dinosaurs and the solar system to name two. My high schoolers like the adult versions of the books.

Usbourne – AWESOME science books! And another that I forgot to add to my history list!! ARGH! I need all my books unpacked!!!

My First Discoveries – GREAT for younger kids.

*** For Dummies Series –  I know, I know… That’s not a nice title but the older kids really enjoy the books. They think they are funny and engaging. THAT’S what counts! 😉

*** Idiot’s Guides – Same as above. 😉 The site has videos for different topics. Click on those and it shows a selection of books.

*** Isaac Asimov

There’s another science series that I have for my older kids but I can’t for the life of me remember what it’s called! And of course, they are still packed!! ARGH!!!!

These are not books but are still GREAT-  SmartLab Toys. Cailey and Colin love the Squishy Brain, Squishy Body and Squishy T-Rex. Wish I had remembered to add that to my dinosaur resources!! Good grief, if I only had a brain!!!

Dinosaur Resources

We have a MAJOR dinosaur lover in this house!! Colin has been a complete and total dinosaur fan since he was about 1 1/2! We have studied them over and over and over. We have read just about every dinosaur book out there. We have TONS of toy dinosaurs strewn from end of the house to the other. We’ve put together wooden dino skeletons. You name it and we’ve probably done it. LOL BUT it’s been a little while since we’ve gotten into the nitty gritty of an actual dinosaur unit study and I figure its time has come.

If you’ve ever wondered what you get in a Magic School Bus Kit here’s a picture of the opened dinosaur kit.

You get everything but the book up in the top left corner.

Is it cold where you are???? As I am writing this it is 12 feels like -1. Which would be OK if we actually had SNOW!! But no, no snow here. It snowed in Louisiana but not HERE!! What’s a person have to do???

My point is, I bet you can’t wait for spring, right?? And I bet you are going to be watching ol’ Punxsutawney Phil to see how much longer we have to put with this! 😉 To help you get the most out of Groundhog’s Day I’ll be listing some resources for a unit study!

Squirrel Appreciation Day – Resources

I had written up a unit on penguins for Penguin Awareness Day (tomorrow) but then I realized, so had everyone else! LOL Do you really need another one? Probably not right now. So, I decided to go ahead and post the one I did for Squirrel Appreciation Day (January 21st). I haven’t seen any of those yet! LOL

The thing is, a lot of bloggers do the same theme around the same time. Right after I posted the one for Winter Olympics, I saw dozens of others. DRAT!! If I had waited just a little longer I could have added them to my list! LOL The same with the penguins. I had my list all written out when I started seeing all the others. Now I’ll just wait until the rest are done, add them to my list and post at a much later date. LOL Turn it from Penguin Awareness Day to just a study on penguins. 😉

I am at a loss as to what to do about the Iditarod unit. It has been really hard to find a lot of resources for it. Do I wait and see if any more come out? Or do I post it soon? Hmmm….
