DinoROAR Tutorial Part 1

DinoROAR 1

I decided to break this up into 2 posts since there is A LOT involved. Part 1 will be the shorts and Part 2 will the raglan tee and vest.

Now, there are a few things I would change about the shorts and I will be sure to tell you exactly what they are and help you avoid the same mistakes I did. ๐Ÿ˜‰

For the shorts I used –

About 1 yard of stretchy denim

Small pieces of dino print

Small pieces of blue cotton for lining

1″ elastic

DinoRoar Tut 002

These are the front parts of the shorts. The red circles show where I cut for the faux fly and the green circles show where I cut the pockets. Now, when I do this again I will be sure to cut the pockets bigger and lower!!! I think it would have looked MUCH better.

Now, I seem to have misplaced the pics of the back legs…. But you cut them normally, without the pockets and faux fly extension.

DinoRoar Tut 007

To cut the back parts of the pocket pieces, use the pocket cut out and make sure your pieces will be wider and much longer than the pocket cutout. ๐Ÿ˜‰

DinoRoar Tut 009

Now for the front part of the pocket. First, use the back of the pocket and cut the front part the exact same. Then take the piece of denim that you cut out to form the pocket on the shorts, place it over the front part of the pocket ย and cut that part out.

DinoRoar Tut 012

Take the front pocket piece and pin it to the right side of the shorts. Now, sew them together just at the part that is pinned.

Turn the pocket part in and press.

DinoRoars Tut 014

Pin the back part of the pocket to the front side and only sew the parts you see pinned.

DinoROAR tut 016

Pin the front of the pants leg to the back with right sides together. Sew up the seam.

DinoRoar tut 020

Cut your back pockets, turn in about 1/4″, press and then another 1/4″. Pin three sides to the back of the shorts and sew on!

I would also have made the back pockets a bit bigger and put them lower. ๐Ÿ˜‰

DinoRoar tut 023

Now, sew a finishing stitch across the bottoms of the legs, fold over about 2 1/2″ and press. DO NOT SEW YET!!!

DinoRoar tut 024

Pin up the inseam from the bottom of the leg to the start of the crotch curve. ย Sew the seam.

DinoRoar Tut 033

Fold the cuff half way on the outside of the legs and top stitch into place.

DinoRoar Tut 025

Turn one leg right side out and one leg inside out. Slide the right side out down into the inside out. Pin all the way around and sew them together, making sure to follow the curve of the faux fly.

DinoRoar Tut 029

Turn the shorts right side out and tuck the faux fly part in. Now, top stitch from the top and around the curve at the bottom.

DinoRoar Tut 2 002

Sew a finishing stitch across the top of the shorts. Fold and press over by 1 1/2″. Sew the elastic casing making sure to leave an opening to insert the elastic through.

DinoRoar Tut 2 003

Pin one end of the elastic and insert it through the casing.

Sew the ends of the elastic together using a zigzag stitch. Then sew the casing closed!

DinoROAR 3

You are all DONE!!!

Make sure to press every seam and every stitch that you sew! It helps to set them. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Be sure to come back tomorrow for the raglan tee and vest tutorials!! ๐Ÿ˜€

~~*~~HAPPY HALLOWEEN~~*~~

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays!!! I LOOOOOVE IT!! I love the weather! The leaves falling from the trees! The hot chocolate! The costumes! And the candy… LOL ๐Ÿ˜‰

BUT my two little ones are sick!!!! WAH!!! Cailey and Colin both have nasty colds. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ First no Halloween party at church because of the Frankenstorm and now no trick or treating!! They are so disappointed! But we are going to try to make it up to them a little. They are wearing their costumes all day and vegging out in front of the TV with Halloween cartoons. After The Hubby gets home from work we are going to go out and buy them some candy. At least this way they will be sure to get their favorites!

I can’t believe, with having 5 kids, that this will be the first time this has happened. The older 3 always got sick right after Halloween.

Here are some pics of Cailey and Colin in their mommy made costumes!

Here are the Halloween Rice Krispies Treats and Cailey and Colin made last night.

I think there are only 3 left! LOL

AND I am the very proud nominee of the The Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award!!!! WOOOO HOOOO!!! Given to me by Shelly Bean at Follow Me Home.ย You should check out her blog, it is AWWWWWWESOME!!!!!!

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH, Shelly!!!

AND since I have so much going on around here I have been given a reprieve from jumping through the usual award hoops! LOL

Here is my to-do list for today –

Sorting through Jacob’s room. (He moved out the other day and left me HUGE mess!!!)

Running donations to the thrift store.

Taking care of 2 sick little ones.

Packers arrive between 8 and 9 in the morning.

Laundry, laundry and more laundry.

And all the other crap that I do everyday….

Heaven help me!!! LOL I’m already tired and I haven’t even started on any of this yet! I need a nap just thinking about it all!!!!

Stuff, Stuff and More….Stuff…..

WOW. I can sure pick a title… Oh, brother… LOL

So, what have I been up to?? Let me tell you all about it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have Colin’s dinosaur costume almost all the way done! YAY! All it needs are eyes, nostrils and teeth! LOL

I have most of the Snoopy costume done. I need to finish the head and make the hands and feet!

This is the back of Snoopy. ๐Ÿ˜‰

THEN I will be working on Cailey’s Tinkerbell. All kinds of ideas are floating around in my head about that one!

We have been sorting through the girls’ clothes in anticipation of our move. SIGH… Still SOOOO much to do. ย The toys need to be thinned out in a BAD BAD way. My books will be SLIGHTLY thinned out. Just a smidge, really. ๐Ÿ˜‰

This football game is NOT going the way it ought to! Come on, Mountaineers!! You are #5!! You are playing an unranked team!! GOOD GRIEF!!! I wonder if it has to do with those ugly new helmets they are wearing… LOL

The killer toothache is back. BLECK!!!! My cousin and her cutie patootie little guy were supposed to come up and visit today. Because of my toothache I had to cancel. WAH!!!! We were going to go to the pumpkin patch. :*(

Yesterday I got to spend a couple of hours with my BFF. She lives about 4 hours away and we only get to see each other about twice a year. Unfortunately my tooth started up last night so I went home early. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Here is a pic of my 2 youngest with her 2 kids. ๐Ÿ™‚

I guess when we move we won’t be able to see each other twice a year. NOT HAPPY!!!! BUT hopefully when we get settled we can invite them down. FINGERS CROSSED!!!

We have put off homeschooling until we are moved and settled. There’s just too much going on right now. We will just have to make the time up by going later into the summer. OHHH, maybe I can talk them into doing January through September as a school year!! I have really been considering that. It would just work so much better. There’s always so much going on in October, November and December. It would be nice to use those months as our break. The summer is always so hot that no one wants to go out and do anything anyway! Well, except for the pool…..

OK, tooth is killing me. I think I will try to lie down and rest. Maybe if the pain eases up I can take a nap!

Dinosaur Shirt and Pants Tutorial

Isn’t he a cutie?? LOL

This is a tutorial to make the dinosaur shirt and matching pants. I begged him to let me make shorts but nope…. he wanted pants. LOL ย If you want to use the same dinosaur print I got it at Joann’s. ๐Ÿ˜‰

This is what I used-

1 yard for the pants

1/2 yard of knit for the shirt

1 package of coordinating bias tape

1/2″ elastic

a ball point needle (for the knit)

A pair of pants that fit your child

A t-shirt that fits your child

Step 1 –

Fold the fabric over and place the pants on top with the crotch pulled out as far as it will go.

Cut around the pants leaving room for the seam allowance.

Step 2 –

Flip over the pants leg you just made and place it a fold of the fabric. Cut the second leg using the first as a guide.

Step 3 –

Cut out a dinosaur picture.

Remove the cat from the fabric!!! Good grief!!

Cut out another dinosaur picture (I did that so I can make a second shirt to go with a pair of shorts I made a little while ago)

Step 4 –

Pin up the side of one leg from the bottom to the crotch. Now, when I sew a seam first I do a finishing stitch along the edges and THEN I go back and sew either a straight stitch or another finishing stitch. I realize this is backwards (LOL) but it’s just the way I prefer to do it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Do the other leg the same way.

Step 5 –

Turn one leg right side out and slip it into the other leg

Step 6 –

Remove the cat from the fabric, AGAIN!!!! SIGH….

Pin up the sides and sew it up, reinforcing the crotch.

Step 7 –

Fold over the top 3/4″ inch and press. Fold over 1″ and press creating the elastic casing.

Step 8 –

Cut your elastic 1 to 2″ smaller than your child’s waist measurement. 2 if it’s VERY stretchy!

Pin both ends with safety pins and insert one end into the elastic casing while holding tightly or pinning the other end.

Step 9 –

Sew the 2 ends of the elastic together using a zigzag stitch.

Step 10 –

Sew the elastic casing closed.

Step 11 –

Turn up the bottom of the legs 1/2″ and press. Then turn up 3/4″ and press. Sew the hem.

Now the pants are done!! YAY!!!

On to the shirt!

Step 1 –

Fold the shirt in half with the sleeves tucked under and place on the fold. Using the shirt as a guide cut around leaving room for the seam allowance.

Step 2 –

Place the piece you just cut on the fold and cut the 2nd piece.

Step 3 –

Place your bodice piece over the fabric with the fold at the top. Use the armhole as a guide to cut your sleeves.

They will look like the picture below.

Step 4 –

Pin the dinosaur piece to the front of the shirt and sew a straight stitch around the edges. You can zigzag around the edges if you want to, I just like the look it gets when it frays a bit. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Step 5 –

Pin the tops of the sleeves together and sew. ๐Ÿ™‚ Right sides touching if your fabric has a right and wrong side. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Step 6 –

Pin the sides together and sew the seam.

Step 7 –

Pin the sleeves together at the seam allowance and sew the seam.

Always make sure to press your seams open or to the side. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I should have been saying that all along……

Step 8 –

Turn the shirt inside out and turn the sleeve right side out. Insert sleeve into armhole, pin and sew the seam.

But be careful not to do this……. LOL

ROFLOL!! I was getting a little tired yesterday….. LOL

Step 9 –

Take your bias tape and pin it around the neckline. Sew it on. ๐Ÿ™‚

Now, I seem to have lost or forgotten to take the pictures for the next steps but they are simple so I will just type them out.

Step 10 –

Pin the bias tape around each sleeve and sew in place.

Step 11 –

Fold over the bottom of the shirt 3/4″ and press. Fold over an 1/2 and press. Sew the hem. Press!

Turn right side out! You are DONE!! YAY!!!

As always let me know what you think about the tutorial. Is it easy to follow?? And definitely let me know if you try it out!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

J2 said to me today that my fabric stash resembles the Leaning Tower of Pisa! ROFLOL!!!!
