SEW Excited! Another Pattern Remix and Other Cool Stuff!

Project Run & Play is doing another pattern remix challenge!! YIPPPEE!! The pattern is from Me Sew Crazy.

I can’t wait to get started on it!!! I have so many ideas floating around in my head!! I was thinking that I wouldn’t have time to try it out but I just got confirmation YESTERDAY from Joann’s about the fabric I ordered. GRRRR! I ordered it LAST WEEK!! It’s for the outfit my cousin Sandra (Rivas & Co.) hired me to make.

ANYWAY, I have tons of ideas for this remix!! Now, I just have to get started! 😉

In other “exciting” news, our owl pellets arrived yesterday! YAY!!!!

Owl Pellets (Set of 5)

You get 5 for $9.95 and they come with a little pamphlet about barn owls. The pamphlet shows the different types of animals that barn owls eat and what those animals’ bones look like. Not bad for $10.  Our fake pellets from Hobby Lobby were more than that and we only got 2 (maybe 3).

We have A LOT of hands on stuff going on this week. We started owls, Spain, vikings AND rocks and minerals yesterday.

Young Scientist Series - Set 3: Minerals (Kit 7) - Crystal (Kit 8) - Fossils (Kit 9)

We will be using the minerals (kit 7) and the crystals (kit 8) from The Young Scientist Club.  We USED to get the monthly subscription until I realized that buying them from Amazon was MUCH cheaper. The monthly subscription is about $17 a month and you only get 1 kit where as at Amazon you can get 3 kits in one set for $24.97. Doesn’t take rocket science to figure that one out!

Yesterday Cailey was sick ( fever, sore throat and a headache) so we took it easy. She basically just watched videos on Discovery Streaming.  Speaking of Discovery Streaming, some states provide free access for homeschoolers!! It is SOOOOOOO very awesome! Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina are the 3 I heard about. In Georgia, we access it through our PBS website.  You e-mail the education department and provide your DOI (Declaration of Intent). They will then email you with your user name and password. I have to say, if we ever move to a state where it isn’t free, I might just have to suck it up and pay for it. It is SUCH an awesome resource. Cailey watched Jeff Corwin in Spain, a video introducing the rock cycle, a video about vikings AND one about owls! On YouTube she watched Schoolhouse Rock Multiplication and Schoolhouse Rock Grammar. After that she read a couple chapters in The Hundred Dresses, copied her spelling words and called it a day. 😉

BUT today I promised that we would dive into the owl pellets and science kits. Colin was begging to get into them last night! LOL

It just occurred to me that I never write about what the big kids do for school. I guess because I no longer create the units for them. :/ I will start adding their stuff, too! Homeschooling high school can be so intimidating but it isn’t really much different than the younger years. 😉

Ireland and St Patrick Unit Study

I plan on starting an Ireland/St. Patrick unit the week before St. Patrick’s Day and continuing the week after.

All the resources I use are either free or cheap. The books can be found at your local library, on Paperback Swap or on Amazon (some free).

The one thing I use for country studies that isn’t free or very cheap is Little Passports. Also, when we lived in Virginia I would run out to World Market and grab things from the country we were going to study next. I MISS THAT!!!!

Tee to Short-all Refashion Tutorial

Tee to Short-all 1

My cousin, Sandra (Rivas & Co.) is my newest client! YAY!!! She bought a t-shirt for Liam in the smallest size available (about a child’s 6/7) but it was way too big (Liam is 15 months old)! What to do, what to do??? AH HA! Make it a short-all! So she gave me a call and asked if I could do it. SURE! 🙂

What I Used

t-shirt

6 size 16 snaps (7/16 “)

navy thread

Step 1

Tee to Short-all 2

Cut out a section at the bottom of the tee to make the legs.

HINT – if you want snaps in the crotch, DO NOT cut this big of a section out….. Learn from MY mistakes. 😉 I would just cut it straight and then fold and press.

Also, if you aren’t concerned about the neck and arm holes being too big, you can simply add the snaps to the crotch and be done! 😉

Step 2 –

Tee to Short-all 3

I took my BFF, the seam ripper, and took the binding off of the arm holes.

HINT- If you aren’t concerned about the arms being too big you can skip that part. Especially if you are putting the snaps in the crotch. 😉

Step 3 –

Tee to Short-all 4

Cut a tad off the sides to create your new arm holes.

Step 4 –

Tee to Short-all 6

Take your trusty seam ripper and pick apart the shoulders. Then fold over 1″ , press and top stitch.

Add your snaps!

This will also make the neck smaller. 😉

Step 5  –

Tee to Short-all 8

Stitch the ends in place.

Step 6 –

Tee to Short-all 12

Pin and stitch the inseam.

Step 7 –

Tee to Short-all 16

Pin the binding back on the arm holes and stitch in place.

NOTE – My machine was not being well behaved and kept chewing up the binding, so I just folded the edges of the arm holes over and stitched in place.  Ever since I had to get a new presser foot my machine has been touchy. :/

Step 8 –

Tee to Short-all 18

Pin and stitch the side seam.

You are ALLLLLL done! 😀

Tee to Short-all 22

Now my little cousin Liam has a new short-all with his daddy’s ship on it! YAY!!!!!

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to use the Contact Me button at the top of the page and shoot me an e-mail! 🙂

Sew Quiet Lately

I am so sorry for not posting the last few days. I have been having a little quiet time. Well, as quiet as can be with 4 kids in the house… LOL   I have a few projects in the works that I will be sharing in the next few days. My cousin Sandra over at Rivas & Co. has hired me to refashion a t-shirt into a short-all (plus a couple of other things) and I will be sharing that tutorial with you shortly. It’s going to be SOOOO cute!! 🙂

I stopped at the tiny local fabric shop yesterday to pick up same navy thread (for the short-all) and while I was there I grabbed a couple  more than a couple of things…. LOL

They have a couple of baskets on the counter and everything in them is 50 cents!! I grabbed a bottle of Fray Check and a few appliques. YAY!

New Fabric - Paris

I bought 2 fat quarters of Paris Ville by Michael Miller. Very cute but when I got home I noticed that the grain line runs so that the print would be sideways instead of the way it is pictured now. WEIRD!!

New Fabric - Robert Kaufman

I bought  1 1/2 yards of this Robert Kaufman print. It was just SO cute!!!!! I’m thinking a spring outfit for Cailey!

New Fabric - Yellow Floral

This is a remnant piece, maybe 1/2 a yard. It’s nice and thick, perfect for a purse or maybe a tote.

New Fabric - Western

This is just a tiny piece, about 12″ x 43″, but I think it will make a perfect book cover for my Dad.

Speaking of my Dad, yesterday was his 60th Birthday!! YAY!! There were many times that we didn’t think he would make it to 60. He has so many health problems. He was supposed to be on his way to visit us but has been delayed by a massive migraine that has lasted 3 days so far. Keep him in your prayers, please.

020

IF he can make it down here he can look forward to the cake we got for him. (If I can keep the kids out of it long enough. LOL)  I asked for a western theme and this is what they gave me. :/ Not bad but not what  I was expecting, either. That’s what happens when you only have 2 grocery stores to choose from and no real bakeries!!!  LOL

Like I said, I have some project in the works and some study units I need to get together. The posts will be coming, I promise!!  I guess I just needed a little down time after Jacob left. I miss him so much and the time just seems to fly by when he is here.

A Day at the Beach

Beach 095

As most of you know, Jacob (our oldest son) is visiting from Virginia for a few days and brought his best friend, Charles, with him. We decided to take the morning and head to the beach! Our older 3 kids hadn’t been to the beach since they were VERY little and our youngest 2 had never been at all!! I LOVE the beach but, unfortunately, The Hubby does NOT, so while he was at work we took off and went! We are much closer to the beach here than when we lived in Virginia so now I can take the kids any time! YAY!!!!

Beach 098

Beach 101

Beach 104

Beach 109

Left to right : Joshua, Jacob and Charles.

Beach 115

It was in the 60’s yesterday, so while not exactly ideal beach weather it was still warm enough to dip our toes. 😉

Shhh!! I actually got a picture of Deanna!!!

Beach 118

We saw A LOT of sand dollars!! SOOOOOO COOL!!!!

Beach 122

We also saw a jelly fish that had washed up on shore.

Beach 154

Jacob found a dead horseshoe crab. He thought it was pretty awesome. LOL

Beach 132

Beach 136

Colin’s sandcastle.

Beach 143

Beach 146

Cailey’s sandcastle.

We had a FANTASTIC day at the beach and the kids can’t wait to go back! YAY!!!

On a sad note, Jacob and Charles leave this evening to head back to Virginia. I hate to see them go but at least they are heading back with new experiences. I hope the train ride back is more comfortable for them!

Sooo…. I…… Ummmmm…… Lost my list, again…… And here I am at the last second trying to pull something out of my ear. YILES!!!!!!!
Here is some of what I can remember.
FIRST I have BIG BIG BIG NEWS!!!! For my Valentine’s Day present, The Hubby bought Jacob train tickets to come visit this weekend!! YAY!!!! We are paying for him AND his best friend to come down! They will get in bright and early Sunday morning and will be here until late Tuesday evening! YAY!! I am SOOOOOO excited! THE BEST Valentine’s Day present EVER!!!! I can’t wait to squeeze him!
OH! For those of you that may not know, Jacob is our oldest son. He is 19 and when we moved from VA to GA he decided to stay in VA. Broke my poor heart all to pieces. This will be his second visit since we moved here at the beginning of November.
Colin lost his first tooth!!! YAY!! He was sooooo anxious about it!  He has a 2nd loose one that I imagine will be gone any day now. I can wait to see him missing his 2 bottom front teeth!!! LOL SO stinkin’ cute!
I am in the process of rereading the Harry Potter books for the I don’t know WHAT time. LOL I almost had The Hubby persuaded into buying me the entire series in the British versions but then he remembered that Jacob coming to visit was my present… Drat. Foiled again! 😉
The Hubby told me a couple of weeks ago that I had too many books. HA!! No such thing exists!! Then I pointed out to him that he has quite a large library of DVDs. That got him quiet. 😉
I am still trying to adjust to living this far south. (We are almost in Florida.) It just isn’t normal to have pollen and flowers in February. SIGH….. I want some SNOW, people!!!!!!
In Bags of Hope and Love news, I sent in ANOTHER email to the foster care system a couple of counties over (our county is TINY and has 6 kids total in the system) and I STILL haven’t heard back!! I am so upset. I am not quite sure what to do…. I think that I will sew up some bags and send them to my old church and do some sewing with Hopeful Threads.
This month I nearly burnt myself out. I just had too many balls in the air and nearly dropped them all. Sewing, blogging, homeschooling, homemaking and taking college courses…… My goodness!! I have only one week left in my Business Growth class, though! YAY!!! Oh, and the final…. YILES!! Wish me luck!!!! At the end of April I will be starting a design class but a couple of my other classes should be done by then, I think….
I can’t seem to remember any of the crazy or funny stuff!!! Figures. So to make up for that……..
Sewing, homeschooling, Harry Potter and cats. Yep, I covered all the bases. 😉
